Take an early lunch break with fellow Cornell Alums at a world-class architectural and specialty glass casting studio – John Lewis Glass in Oakland, the largest (20,000 sq. ft.) glass studio of its kind in North America.


John Lewis, internationally known and considered to be one of the top cast glass artists in the world, is one of the first artists to set up a hot glass studio in the Bay Area. With major commissions that include the Ice Falls in Hearst Tower, the Oklahoma City Memorial, Morgan Stanley NYC HQ, Fidelity Tower in Sydney, Battery Park City World Financial Center and Mikimoto in Beverly Hills - his works are also in the collections of The Boston Museum of Fine Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. 


The tour will be led by John Lewis himself. We’ll begin in the Clean Room and work our way to the Sand Blasting Area, then onto Cold Working and finally the Hot Shop where we will see 3,000 pounds of hot glass being poured at 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. The pieces will be taken out of mold and put into annealing ovens to cool slowly depending on the glass thickness for a process that will last for weeks or even months. We’ll end up in the John Lewis Gallery across the street for further discussion and enjoy a gourmet catered four-course Japanese lunch and assorted beverages (included in tour price).

10:30am - Early Arrival and Check-in
11:00am-12:00noon - Glass Studio Tour
12:00pm -1:00pm - Catered lunch from Stella Nonna Restaurant, choice of meat, fish or vegetarian. 


NOTE: Dress for the occasion in dark work clothes with non-slip closed toed shoes. You may get a little dirty because graphite is everywhere, as it used in the molds.
