Volunteer at Second Harvest Food Bank Cypress Center (San Jose)

Join fellow Cornell Alumni for a community service event – volunteering at the Second Harvest Food Bank in San Jose!

About Second Harvest:

“Based in Silicon Valley, Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties is one of the largest food banks in the nation. Currently providing food to more than one quarter of a million people every month, Second Harvest is a trusted community-based organization that was founded in 1974. Despite the immense wealth in Silicon Valley, and partly due to the high cost of living, hunger and malnutrition are pervasive. The Food Bank distributes nutritious food, including more fresh produce than almost any other food bank in the country, through a network of 300 nonprofit partners at 905 sites. Second Harvest is pursuing innovative efforts to increase access to food resources as it seeks to feed an additional 100,000 hungry people each month. To reach more people, it connects those in need to federal nutrition programs and other food resources."

We will be volunteering at the Cypress Center Food Sort warehouse at 4001 N. First Street San Jose, from 9:00am-12:00pm. Volunteers inspect and categorize donated food products (such as dry goods and produce) and bag, box, or repack to ready for distribution. Training is provided at the beginning of each shift. Wear your Cornell gear or red so we can find each other!

Important Information:

• Please plan to arrive no sooner than 10 minutes before and no later than 10 minutes after our start time of 9:00am. 
  
• The dress code at the Food Bank is casual and comfortable. No shorts and no tank tops are permitted. Closed toe shoes and long pants are required. Please leave all valuables in the trunk of your cars. No purses or backpacks
  
• All volunteers must complete a volunteer agreement form. Please bring your completed form with you. We will also have some on site for people to fill out before our shift starts.
• On-site parking is available.
• The minimum age to volunteer at the Food Bank is 14 years of age. For any volunteers under the age of 18, both Youth Permission Form and Volunteer Agreement are required, and a parent or guardian over the age of 21 must accompany those youth between the age of 14 and 15 years of age. 
• Want to do more? Please consider bringing donations of non-perishable food items! High protein items such as tuna and peanut butter are greatly appreciated or meals in a can like stew and soups. One can or one case does make a difference!
